Skin Care And Skin Concerns – Oily Skin, Congested And Enlarged Pores

Oily and congested skin is commonly associated with enlarged pores because of the over production of sebum that increase the pore size. Oily skin types are more prone to develop acne because of the over production of sebum but that is not the case for all skins. It is possible to have oily skin and not develop acne. Oily skin is a challenge, there is a fine balance between removing enough sebum to get rid of facial shine while not inducing skin dehydration. Many clients with oily skin are tempted to use strong detergent cleansers to remove sebum, however the intercellular lipids are also damaged yielding the appearance of dry skin. It is not possible for a cleanser to separate between sebum and intercellular lipids, thus a cleanser should be selected that minimizes barrier damage. Barrier damage is a problem created by many acne medications that contain skin irritants such as benzoyl peroxide or retinoids.

Using the right homecare products and suitable treatments help maintain a healthy skin and lessen the open pores. It is important to stress that this are solutions that help manage the appearance of a healthy skin, free of excess oil and enlarged pores but a balanced diet, exercise and drinking plenty of water will help the body from within.

At Laze away we have a great variety of treatments for oily skin types depending on severity and skin type. The therapist will be able to set a program and achieve the best possible outcome.

Recommended Treatments

Detoxifying Medi-facial- a facial that delivers a very light concentration of Salicylic acid, Glycolic Acid and Vitamin A. Clients with a widespread open and closed comedones respond quickly to the kerolytic effect of very light peels or medi- facials.

Microdermabrasion- light cosmetic procedure that uses a mechanical medium for exfoliation to gently remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells from the epidermis. Clears the skin from excessive oiliness and maintains a youthful clear skin. It also improves the appearance of light scarring and light pigmentation caused by acne. Ideal after the course of laser treatments.

Clarifying Medi Facial- A very mild skin peel with salicylic acid. Great to mildly resurface the skin and control oiliness without being too aggressive. Ideal for maintenance before or after the laser course of treatments. Suitable for all skin types.

Salycilic acid Peel- is the ideal option of acne treatments and oily skin types. SA it is an oil soluble active able to penetrate into the sebum of the pore and loosen the comedonal plug and may exert some low level anti-inflammatory effects. Different percentages of the acid allow different depths of resurfacing, depending on type of acne, pigmentation and scarring. Ideal to control the overproduction of oil and it is suitable for all skin types. A course of 4 treatments is recommended for long term results, every two weeks.

Glycolic Acid Peel- an alpha hydroxy is used similarly to salycilic acid peels, however it is a water soluble that is not quite as potent comedolytic but ideal for sensitive skins and can function as a humectant preventing barrier damage from acne medications. Suitable for all skin types. A course of 4 treatments is recommended for long term results, every two weeks.

Healthy Tips

Avoid over cleansing, treating or excessively exfoliating the skin. This can cause irritation and stripping of the skins natural oils, it can increase oil production as a response and increase break out. Avoid over the counter products that claim control acne that in fact but in fact cause dehydration and poor healing.

Always use SPF30, protect compromised skin from UV rays especially between eleven and four in the afternoon the UVA incidence is at its highest, this can aggravate the condition and cause hyperpigmentation. Reapply every 30 min, avoid tanning beds.

Avoid using make up, and if so always use Mineral Make-up, it is skin friendly and less clogging to the pores. Always remove make and cleanse in the evenings with an antibacterial cleanser. Skin should be free of dirt and pollution from the environment. Wipe your skin with a disposable paper towel and change your pillow cases regularly.

Have a balanced diet rich in white meats, leafy green vegetables, fruits, drink plenty of water. A good diet is important to reduce inflammation internally, to help the ability to heal, detoxify, and maintain skins barrier. Avoid smoking, it decreases the healing processes and increases the body’s toxicity. Avoid eating oily and processed foods, caffeine. Exercise to increase circulation, skins oxygenation and reduce free radicals and toxic products of chronic inflammation.

Always cleanse your skin with an antibacterial cleanser, followed by a moisturizes that reduces break outs, control oiliness and enlarged pores. Day time always use a ZINCSPF30, protects vulnerable acne skin from hyperpigmentation.

Skin Care And Skin Concerns- Pigmentation

Good To Know

The actual skin color of different humans is affected by many substances, although the single most important substance determining human skin color is the pigment melanin. Melanin is produced within the skin in cells called melanocytes and it is the main determinant of the skin color of darker-skinned humans. The skin color of people with light skin is determined mainly by the bluish-white connective tissue under the dermis and by the hemoglobin circulating in the veins of the dermis. There is a correlation between the geographic distribution of UV radiation (UVR) and the distribution of indigenous skin pigmentation around the world. Areas that highlight higher amounts of UVR reflect darker-skinned populations, generally located nearer towards the equator. Areas that are far from the tropics and closer to the poles have lower concentration of UVR, which is reflected in lighter-skinned populations.

In the same population it has been observed that adult human females are considerably lighter in skin pigmentation than males. Females need more calcium during pregnancy and lactation. Vitamin D which is synthesized from sunlight helps absorbing calcium. Females evolved to have lighter skin in order to help their bodies absorb more calcium.

What Is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of an area of skin or nails caused by increased melanin. It can be caused by sun damage, inflammation, or other skin injuries, including those related to acne vulgaris. People with darker Asian, Mediterranean, or African skin tones are also more prone to hyperpigmentation, especially if they have excess sun exposure. The best way to presvent this sort of sun damage is by avoiding direct sun exposure between 12am and 4 pm, and at all times use an SPF 30 or SPF50 depending on the skin type and sensitivity.

Many forms of hyperpigmentation are caused by an excess production of melanin. Hyperpigmentation can be diffuse or focal, affecting such areas as the face and the back of the hands. Melanin is produced by melanocytes at the lower layer of the epidermis. Melanins a class of pigment responsible for producing color in the body in places such as the eyes, skin, and hair. As the body ages, melanocyte distribution becomes less diffuse and its regulation less controlled by the body. UV light stimulates melanocyte activity, and where concentrations of the cells are denser than surrounding areas, hyperpigmentation is affected. Can also be caused by using skin lightening lotions. Another form of hyperpigmentation is Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. These are dark and discolored spots that appear on the skin following acne that has healed. Hyperpigmentation may also occur during pregnancy due to dramatic hormonal change, and is called melasma.

Pigmentation may be:

• Epidermal ( superficial) mainly caused by sun exposure and it is easily treated with lightening agents and laser rejuvenation.

• Dermal, melanin is located in the deepest part of the skin, mainly caused by trauma or hormonal changes, more difficult to treat.

Skin Care And Skin Concerns- Aging

Signs of aging skin are the first to appear as the aging process begins to unfold, our bodies change dramatically as we get older. One of the most dramatic changes occur on the skin level, and the signs of aging skin tend to define the age of the person. The health and beauty of our skin as we were younger eventually disappears, we develop wrinkles, dark circles under the eyes, spider veins and many other symptoms, and this is a natural process that affects every individual. Unfortunately we cannot stop the aging process but surely we can erase some of the evident physical signs of it. Hereditary information, a healthy lifestyle with minimum sun damage and regular exercise supports the fight of ageing.

Some signs are obvious, while other symptoms may go unnoticed. This signs can be divided into two main groups, not mutually exclusive. The first changes occur because of genetics- internal or intrinsic aging. Such as wrinkles, thin skin, greater visibility of pores, hollowed cheeks and eye sockets, sagging skin of the face, neck and upper arms, loss of elasticity and loss of firmness on the hands and neck.

The second – extrinsic are the changes that cause because of external influences that affect the bod, such as freckles, age spots that enlarge and darken with age, rough and leathery skin, spider veins on the face, fine and deep wrinkles and actinic keratoses.

For a successful treatment plan we need to recognise the signs of aging skin, correct, treat and understand how to prevent.

An essential homecare anti-ageing regime is of the most importance, to correct on a daily basis the damage caused and accumulated over the years. It also prepares the skin for the treatments.
